This is an example of an Eastenders promo trailer. Promotion adverts are used to entice the audience to watch the TV soap opera. Unlike film trailers, soap promotion trailers are much shorter and use special techniques, to grasp the audience’s attention. Straight away the audience can understand that this is a type of trailer, due to it being conventionally pieced together, for example, the length of the trailer and quick changes between shots.
The trailer begins with a long establishing shot of the well known old Victoria Pub. However, the pub looks more run down than usual, as the windows of the pub have been boarded up. The soap promo begins with a newspaper being blown across the square imitating the stereotypical tumble weed passing by. The digetic music playing in the background is almost creepy and slow paced, creating suspense for the audience. our attention is then drawn to a pair of cowboy boots walking towards the camera with the sound of footsteps over the music.
Throughout the promo we are shown shots of the other characters on the square and how they are reacting to the return of Kat and Alfie. There is then a jump cut back to the cowboy boots. She then drops hers bags and the camera slowly pans upwards to see the whole of Kat’s body. The music at this point speeds up in tempo, turning the suspension to tension.
There is a clear reoccurring theme of the wild west showdown in this promo, which is something that could inspire me when creating my own soap promo. I can tell there is a reoccurring theme due to the music as well as the way in which they are dressed.
